Hi Reinis,

As always, thanks for sharing your insights and experiences. BTW, I love the Derek Sivers video you suggested. I just watched it and can recommend it to everyone who is interested to start a "business" or earn something on the side. Especially things Derek says like, "If its not a Hit, Switch", "keep it simple and humane" and "do things the unusual way (put a smile on peoples faces)" are perfect reminders not only to do what you love, but in case of a business also do something that people/clients really want or need. You can find this video also on YouTube.

Hey, Jan!

Great post, great advice! And I absolutely agree with you! From my own experience I can say that Grand Dreams are necessary - it's what moves us forward, it's what makes us feel alive! I believe life is all about our Story, our Hero's Journey.

And the quality or value of a life is measured by how well and how often we actually TOOK our own Hero's Journey. Day by day, each single small step and decision.

Think of all the great stories - whether novels of movies or fairy tales - the hero doesn't just become his/her greatest self or realize his/her dream in an instant. No, he goes on a journey of inner transformation - one small step/choice at a time.

So, yea, start small. Do what you can do with what you have wherever you are right now.

For example, I actually want to create a school/business school/university. But there's no way I can do it now. So, I started small - by teaching/coaching/guiding people individually. Created a website, wrote articles. Now I'm working on a training program that I want to teach in companies/organizations - to inspire people, make them believe in themselves, empower them, become more entrepreneurial. And through those individual changes the whole company will be changed, and through companies/organizations - the whole country will be changed. :)

But it's a journey, and I'm determined to enjoy every bit of it. :)

Best wishes,
Reinis

Hi Ingrid,

Thanks for your comment. You hit the nail on the head when you point out that very often our sense of obligation is the basis for taking responsibility, especially and notably when it comes to family. This is so deeply embedded in our psyche, through decades of conditioning, that it is no wonder that people are challenged to let this go.

BTW, I am not advocating to drop responsibility all together, but to be critical of what drives you when you “assume” responsibility. Is it from fear, obligation, or because people expect you to that you take responsibility, or is it because you spontaneously want to do something and involve yourself? You will know the difference by paying attention to your feelings…

Love this! I've always had my challenges on this topic. Last year I had to make some profound choices. It was really difficult to let go of this sense of being responsible for others out of obligation, especially because it involved taking care of my mom after she's had a serious health issue. I had to back out in order to take care of myself first. I learned to take responsibility for myself and my own well being and from that place I can offer my support to others, but only if I choose to do so. At times the challenges are still there :)
